What Does an AI Agent Engineer Do?

Your day involves designing multi-step agent workflows where decisions compound. You might sketch out how an agent should interpret a customer query, decide which tools to invoke (APIs, databases, search), handle errors when a tool fails, and iterate until it delivers a correct answer. You write the prompts that shape agent reasoning, design the function schemas that define what actions the agent can take, and build test harnesses to validate that agents behave reliably across edge cases. You're also responsible for observability—ensuring you can trace why an agent made a particular decision, which is critical for debugging autonomous systems.

Unlike prompt engineers who optimize single-turn queries, you're orchestrating *sequences* of decisions. Unlike ML engineers training models, you're leveraging existing LLMs and focusing on the architecture around them. This role demands both systems thinking (how do multiple tools interact?) and empirical rigor (does this agent actually work reliably?).

What You'll Work On

• Designing multi-turn agent workflows using frameworks like LangGraph or CrewAI, defining state transitions and decision points
• Implementing function-calling schemas and tool integrations so agents can reliably invoke APIs, databases, and external services
• Building evaluation frameworks and test suites to measure agent correctness, latency, and cost across diverse scenarios
• Debugging agent reasoning failures and prompt-tuning to reduce hallucinations and improve decision quality
• Shipping production agents that handle real user requests with minimal human-in-the-loop intervention
